Finding the Perfect Disc Jockey by Paul Chamberlin

Client surveys have shown that the DJ Entertainer is responsible for a big portion (on average, 70%-80%) of a successful wedding! While the common perception is that DJs “are all the same” and they “just play music,” today’s talented DJs take on the roles of event manager, emcee, entertainer, and music programmer.

While not a wedding consultant or event designer (DJs usually don’t do the flowers, linens, accessories, or the invitations), premier disc jockey entertainers accept the responsibility of directing and managing the schedule of events so that everything flows smoothly. Ask your potential DJs “How many hours do you spend on each wedding?” Many top entertainers invest 20-25 + hours for each couple. Simply showing up and “winging it” for a few of hours on your wedding day is not acceptable!

Music style and special requests should be discussed in advance and brides should ensure that their DJ has the ability to work as a team member with other wedding professionals. Finally, ask the DJ if he or she carries a complete, on site back up system so the dancing and fun won’t end early.

Other important clues:

• Do they have liability insurance?

• Are they a current member in a local or national DJ association?

• Will they provide a clear, concise, written agreement?

• How many years of FULL TIME experience do they have running their company?

DJs who depend on doing a great job for their livelihood are sure to take extra special care of their clientele!

What kind of prices should you expect to pay for this talent and service? Several national organizations suggest that brides use $1,200 as the “baseline” for a DJ in the United States providing four hours of entertainment time. As with all things in life, if the price sounds too good to be true, buyer beware!

Brides who are planning extended receptions or would like their DJ to provide music and sound reinforcement for their ceremony should expect a higher rate. Brides seeking a highly talented, full service DJ would also expect to pay a premium fee. Finally, the most popular DJs get booked quickly, so brides should start interviews as soon as they have their wedding location and date secured!

We hope that you find a Mobile DJ Professional who will help create many wonderful memories of your special day. Good luck, and have fun!
